SEO for Roofers in Australia: A Plain-English Guide

How Australian roofers get found on Google without tricks: your Business Profile, service and suburb pages, reviews, speed and links, in the order that matters.

Shoaib RamzanFounder, LeadKites Updated 7 min read 5 sources checked

SEO for a roofer is mostly local: showing up in the Google map results and the first few organic results when someone near you searches for roof work. That comes from a complete Google Business Profile, a website with a clear page for each service, suburb pages built from real jobs, a steady flow of genuine reviews, a fast site and a few local links. There are no shortcuts that last. The tricks that promise quick rankings are usually the ones Google's spam policies warn against.

This guide is for roofers doing their own SEO, or checking what an agency is doing for them. It goes in the order we'd do the work.

How does Google decide which roofers to show?

For local searches, Google says results are mainly based on three things (Google Business Profile Help):

What Google looks at for local results

Relevance

What Google means
How well your profile matches the search
What you can do
Accurate categories, services, descriptions and service pages

Distance

What Google means
How far you are from the searcher
What you can do
Set your real service area. You can't change where you're based

Prominence

What Google means
How well known your business is
What you can do
Reviews, replies, links and mentions from other websites, an active profile

Google says prominence includes how many websites link to your business and your reviews, and that "more reviews and positive ratings can help your business's local ranking".

Step 1: Fix your Google Business Profile

For most roofers, the Business Profile is the single biggest SEO lever, because it controls the map results that sit above the normal listings.

Our Google Business Profile guide walks through ten fixes in order, with an interactive example.

Step 2: One page per service

A single "Services" page listing everything is hard for Google to match to a specific search. Give each main service its own page:

  • Roof repairs and leak detection
  • Roof restoration
  • Re-roofing (tile to metal, Colorbond)
  • Gutters and downpipes
  • Whatever else you actually do

Each page should say what the work is, how you do it, what it typically involves, which areas you cover, photos from real jobs, reviews that mention that service, and a clear way to book. Write it for a homeowner, not a search engine.

Step 3: Suburb pages, but only from real jobs

Suburb pages can help you show up for "roof restoration [suburb]" searches. They can also hurt you if they're copies of the same text with the suburb name swapped. Google's spam policies call out doorway pages and content made mainly to rank rather than to help people (Google Search Central: spam policies).

Step 4: Get reviews the right way

Reviews help with prominence and with the homeowner deciding to call. Ask every happy customer the same way, at the same moment, and make it easy with a direct link. Reply to all of them.

Never buy reviews, write your own, or only ask customers you know are happy (sometimes called review gating). Google's policies and the ACCC's guidance on online reviews both cover this. Our Google reviews guide has the wording to use.

Step 5: Make your site fast on a phone

Most people looking for a roofer are on a phone. Google's Core Web Vitals set "good" thresholds for real users (web.dev):

Core Web Vitals: what "good" looks like

LCP (Largest Contentful Paint)

What it checks
How fast the main content loads
Good
Within 2.5 seconds

INP (Interaction to Next Paint)

What it checks
How quickly the page responds to taps
Good
200 ms or less

CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift)

What it checks
How much the page jumps around
Good
0.1 or less

Common fixes for roofing sites: compress and resize photos, remove heavy sliders and unused plugins, and use a decent host. Test your pages with Google's PageSpeed Insights.

Links and mentions from other websites are part of prominence. For a roofer, useful ones are usually local and real:

  1. 1Business listingsList your business consistently (same name, phone, website) on reputable directories and trade association listings you belong to.
  2. 2Suppliers and manufacturersSome supplier and coating brands list approved or registered applicators.
  3. 3Local communitySponsor a local sports club or community event that lists sponsors on its website.
  4. 4PartnersBuilders, real estate agents, insurance assessors and other trades you work with may link to recommended trades.
  5. 5Useful contentA genuinely helpful guide, such as storm preparation for your area, can earn links from local news or community sites.

Avoid paid link schemes. They break Google's spam policies and can do more harm than good.

How long does roofing SEO take?

Business Profile fixes can show results within weeks. Website pages and links usually take months to build up. Nobody can honestly promise a ranking or a number of calls by a date, so be wary of anyone who does.

While SEO builds, make sure the enquiries you do get are answered. A ranking is wasted if the call goes to voicemail:

Estimated value left on the table

$8,119

a month, or about $97,425 a year. This is an estimate from your own numbers, not a promise. Even if it's half right, one saved job a month pays for LeadKites many times over.

Frequently asked questions

How do roofers rank higher on Google Maps?

Complete your Google Business Profile with accurate categories, services and service area, add real job photos and updates, get genuine reviews regularly and reply to them, and link to a website with clear service pages. Google says local results are mainly based on relevance, distance and prominence.

Do suburb pages help roofing SEO?

They can, if each page is built from real work in that suburb with specific photos, details and reviews. Copy-paste pages with only the suburb name changed can be treated as doorway pages under Google's spam policies.

How long does SEO take for a roofing business?

Business Profile fixes can help within weeks. Website content and links usually take months. Nobody can honestly guarantee a ranking or a number of calls.

Is SEO or Google Ads better for roofers?

They work together. Google Ads can bring enquiries quickly while you pay for clicks. SEO builds visibility you don't pay for per click, but takes longer. Many roofers use ads while their SEO builds. See Google Ads for roofers.

What's the most important SEO task for a roofer?

For most roofers, a complete and active Google Business Profile with steady genuine reviews, because it controls the map results most local searchers see first.
