Sydney is a big, crowded roofing market with real hail risk. The roofers who win are the ones who answer first and follow up every quote.

Sydney has more than 5.6 million people and a long record of expensive hailstorms, so there is roofing work all year. The catch is that homeowners have dozens of roofers to choose from. In a market this crowded, the job usually goes to the roofer who answers first, shows up well on Google Maps and follows up the quote, not to the cheapest one.

What the Sydney roofing market looks like

Greater Sydney had an estimated 5,638,830 residents at 30 June 2025, up 75,230 (1.4%) in a year, according to the ABS. That's a huge base of roofs, from federation terraces in the inner west to brick-and-tile homes across the west and south-west and newer estates on the city's growth fringe.

For a roofer, size cuts both ways. There's always work, but a homeowner in Castle Hill or Sutherland can find twenty roofers in five minutes on Google. Most will ring two or three, and send a form to a few more. Whoever answers the phone, or texts back first, usually gets the inspection booked.

Sydney's spread matters too. Driving from Penrith to Randwick in peak hour can take well over an hour, so most successful Sydney roofers pick a region (the Hills, the Shire, the west, the north shore) and dominate it, rather than trying to cover the whole basin.

Storm and hail season in Sydney

The Bureau of Meteorology says Australia's severe weather season runs from October to April, with large hail, damaging winds and flash flooding among the main thunderstorm hazards. Sydney's history shows how costly that can get.

Sydney's big roof-damage events
  1. 14 April 1999

Cricket-ball-sized hail hit 85 suburbs across the inner and eastern city. About 20,000 houses were damaged. Insured cost $1.7 billion at the time, about $4.3 billion normalised to 2011 (AIDR).

  2. June 2007

The east coast low that grounded the Pasha Bulker at Newcastle also hit the Sydney metro area. Insured cost $1.48 billion across the event (AIDR).

  3. 20 December 2018

A hailstorm across suburban Sydney led to 136,424 insurance claims and an estimated $1.27 billion in insured losses (Insurance Council).

  4. 5-6 April 2024

A storm hit the Hawkesbury-Nepean and Illawarra. Insurers had 11,527 claims within days (Insurance Council).

Two lessons stand out. First, Sydney's biggest hailstorm hit in April, at the tail end of the season, so don't pack up your storm plan in February. Second, east coast lows are a separate risk. A Bureau study of 1970 to 2006 found about 22 east coast lows a year off the coast between Brisbane and eastern Victoria, most often from May to August (UNSW explainer). They bring wind-driven rain that finds every cracked tile and tired valley iron.

Where Sydney roofers get leads today

Most Sydney roofing enquiries come through a handful of channels:

  • Google search and Google Maps. The map pack is where "roofer near me" and "roof leak repair Parramatta" searches land. Your Google Business Profile decides whether you show up.
  • Lead apps like hipages. Fast volume, but you're often one of several roofers on the same job. See what hipages actually costs before you lean on it.
  • Referrals and repeat customers. Still the best leads, but only if past customers can find your number again.
  • Builders, strata managers and real estate agents. Steady work in a city with this many units and rentals.

Whatever the source, the pattern is the same. Leads arrive while you're on a roof. If nobody answers, the homeowner rings the next roofer. Our guide on what missed calls cost a roofer puts a dollar figure on it.

Suburbs to build your reputation in

Sydney is really several markets. A few ways to think about it:

  • Greater Western Sydney (Parramatta, Blacktown, Penrith, Liverpool, Campbelltown, Bankstown): large numbers of brick-and-tile homes from the 1960s to 1990s, many now due for restoration or re-roofing. Price-sensitive, high volume.
  • The Hills and north-west (Castle Hill and surrounds): bigger homes, newer estates and families who expect a quick, professional reply.
  • The north shore and northern suburbs (Hornsby, Chatswood, Ryde): older homes, slate and terracotta, more heritage-style work and higher job values.
  • The Shire (Sutherland and surrounds): strong local loyalty. Reviews from neighbours carry a lot of weight.
  • The east (Randwick and surrounds): the area hit hardest in 1999. Terraces, tight access and plenty of leak repairs.

Pick two or three areas close to your base. Build real job photos and reviews there first. Google rewards a business that's clearly active in a place, and homeowners trust a roofer who has "done the house two streets over".

Your ticks are saved in this browser only.

Most Sydney roofers don't need more leads first. They need to stop losing the ones they already get. A homeowner who sends a form at 7pm and hears nothing until the next afternoon has usually booked someone else. A quote sent and never chased is money left on the table.

Frequently asked questions

When is hail season in Sydney?

The Bureau of Meteorology describes October to April as Australia's severe weather season. Sydney's worst hailstorm on record hit on 14 April 1999, and another major one hit on 20 December 2018, so plan for storms right across that window.

What were Sydney's most expensive hailstorms?

The 14 April 1999 hailstorm cost about $1.7 billion in insured losses at the time. The 20 December 2018 hailstorm led to 136,424 claims and about $1.27 billion in insured losses, according to the Insurance Council of Australia.

Should a Sydney roofer cover the whole city?

Usually not. Travel times across Sydney are long, and Google tends to show businesses near the searcher. Most roofers do better owning two or three regions close to their base.

Is hipages worth it for Sydney roofers?

It can bring volume, but you're often competing with other roofers for the same job. Read our breakdown of hipages costs and compare it with what your own Google profile could bring in.

Does LeadKites have an office in Sydney?

No. Our team works Australian business hours from overseas. We work with Sydney roofers remotely, answering their enquiries, following up quotes and running their Google Maps, reviews and ads.
