On the Sunshine Coast, storm work arrives in bursts and everyday work comes from older homeowners who want someone reliable, so speed and trust win jobs. The Sunshine Coast council area had 342,541 people at the 2021 Census, with a median age of 43. The region sits inside South East Queensland's hail belt, and in November 2019 a hailstorm hitting the Sunshine Coast and parts of Brisbane was declared an insurance catastrophe.

What the Sunshine Coast roofing market looks like

At the 2021 Census, the Sunshine Coast local government area had 342,541 people and 148,638 private dwellings. Of the occupied homes, 73.1% were separate houses, 33.9% were owned outright and 34.5% were owned with a mortgage. The median age was 43, older than the major capitals.

That points to a few kinds of work:

  • Older homes owned outright, where owners are thinking about restorations, re-roofs and leaks before they sell or retire.
  • New estates in the south, around Caloundra West and Baringa, with young families and newer roofs.
  • Units and townhouses along the coast at Maroochydore, Mooloolaba and Kawana, where body corporates make many of the decisions.
  • Hinterland homes around Maleny and Nambour, often older and on bigger blocks.

Coastal weather, salt air and summer storms all wear roofs out. That means there's steady repair and maintenance work between the big storm events.

Storm and hail season on the Sunshine Coast

The Bureau of Meteorology describes October to April as Australia's peak severe weather season. For South East Queensland, the late-spring storms of October and November have a reputation, and the insurance records back that up.

On 17 November 2019, a hailstorm hit parts of Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast. The next day the Insurance Council of Australia declared a catastrophe, reporting more than 5,000 claims (about 3,000 of them for vehicles) and estimated losses of about $40 million, with more claims expected.

More recently, the Insurance Council declared a catastrophe for South East Queensland hailstorms on 23 and 24 November 2025, with more than 16,000 claims across more than 140 postcodes in the first days.

Where Sunshine Coast roofers get leads today

The usual mix is:

  • Referrals and repeat customers. Strong on the Coast, where many people have lived in the same house for years.
  • Google search and Maps. People search for "roof restoration Buderim" or "roof leak repairs near me". Reviews and real photos decide who gets the call.
  • Lead apps such as hipages. Handy in quiet weeks, but you compete with other roofers for the same job. See our hipages cost breakdown.
  • Community Facebook groups. People ask for roofer recommendations by suburb, especially after storms.

Older homeowners often prefer to call rather than fill in a form. That's good news if you answer. If you don't, they move to the next name.

Suburbs to build your reputation in

  • Caloundra, Caloundra West and Baringa. The southern end, mixing older coastal homes with some of the region's newest estates.
  • Kawana, Buderim and Sippy Downs. Family suburbs in the middle of the Coast, with plenty of homes reaching restoration age.
  • Maroochydore and Mooloolaba. Units, townhouses and older beach houses, with salt exposure and strata work.
  • Coolum Beach and Noosa Heads. Coastal homes at the northern end, many of them holiday homes whose owners live elsewhere and want a roofer who keeps them updated.
  • Nambour, Maleny and Beerwah. Hinterland towns with older homes and bigger blocks.

Pick two or three areas you already work in and build proof there: photos of real jobs with the suburb named, reviews that mention the area, and fast replies when neighbours ring. Our Google reviews guide shows how to ask.
